Blog for Week of October 21st

I enjoyed reading the book Lieutenant Nun this week. Catalina had such an interesting personality that I never would have learned about otherwise. I think the main reason I found the book to be so entertaining was the fact that it almost seemed like a fictitious story! It seemed like every other chapter Erauso killed someone or went on some ridiculous adventure. I was amazed at how many times Erauso was able to win her fights and also avoid prison. If you watched a movie about Erauso, you would probably say that it was too unrealistic; that's how crazy her life really was! Even after suffering injuries, Erauso always found ways to continue fighting. I think the main reason for this was her boldness. Erauso saw herself as a man, and, as a result, took on many masculine traits. At that time in history, women didn't have the ability to go out and travel all over the place fighting everyone they crossed paths with. Erauso reshaped her own identity to reflect what she wanted to do in life. In a way, everyone has to reshape themselves to do what they want with their lives. There might always be obstacles blocking the way for people like Erauso, but it's about how we adapt to challenges that matter most. It is important that we all don't think of adapting ourselves as blocking identity, rather a creation of a new one altogether.

  1. Hi Ben! I definitely agree that Erauso led a wild life. Learning about all her escapades was interesting to me as well - she, as a biological woman, did things beyond what most biological men would not even do! Erauso proves what an important character trait that boldness is, and she also serves as a role model in adapting to challenges. Thanks for your thoughts!

  2. Thank you for your post, Ben. I'm glad you enjoyed Erauso's memoirs. I like how you see Erauso as a person who was willing to reshape her identity to achieve the life she wanted for herself. This is an excellent observation.
